Umran Malik, one of India’s fastest and most exciting pacers, burst onto the scene with raw pace that crossed 150 km/h consistently. His fiery spells in the Indian Premier League (IPL) made him a sensation among fans and experts alike. After debuting for India in 2022, the young speedster carried huge expectations. However, inconsistency and injuries halted his progress, forcing him to spend more time on the sidelines than on the field.

Umran Malik Opens Up on His IPL Struggles
In a recent interview, Umran Malik revealed his frustration about warming the bench during the IPL 2023 season. Despite taking 22 wickets in the 2022 campaign for Sunrisers Hyderabad, he played only eight matches the following year and just one in 2024. “One season I took 22 wickets, and the next I was sitting on the bench. It was disappointing, but I stayed motivated,” Malik said. The young pacer used the tough phase to reflect and prepare for his comeback instead of losing confidence.
Focused on Fitness and Ranji Trophy Comeback
Now preparing to represent Jammu and Kashmir in the upcoming Ranji Trophy, Umran has worked extensively on his fitness and bowling rhythm. He trained hard through local tournaments and the Buchi Babu competition to regain full match readiness. “I’ve taken care of my body and gradually increased my bowling load to be match-ready,” he told The Times of India. Umran emphasized that he feels no nervousness despite returning after nearly a year, focusing instead on performing well and taking wickets for his team.
Umran admitted that injuries tested his patience but also made him stronger. “Injuries are part of a fast bowler’s life. Missing an entire season taught me how to manage my body,” he said. The pacer added that daily fitness sessions and disciplined training have helped him become physically and mentally tougher. “I’ve trained every morning and evening, and now my body feels stronger than ever,” he added confidently.
Guidance from Abhishek Nayar Boosted His Mindset
Working with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has also been a major turning point for Umran. He credited Nayar for keeping players focused and mentally balanced. “Working with him has helped a lot. He breaks things down and makes you focus on what truly matters,” Malik explained. With renewed focus, improved fitness, and stronger determination, Umran Malik now aims to reclaim his place among India’s top fast bowlers in the upcoming domestic season.
