Abdominal injury puts Tilak Varma T20 World Cup hopes in doubt

Tilak Varma faces an uncertain period after suffering an abdominal injury that could rule him out of the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand and put India’s T20 World Cup plans under pressure. The left-handed batter has been advised to undergo surgery, which carries a recovery timeline of three to four weeks, making his participation in the full series highly unlikely.

India have received a potential setback ahead of the New Zealand series, as Tilak continues to deal with discomfort that has raised concerns within the team management. His injury also clouds India’s T20 World Cup preparations, with Tilak having become a regular member of the playing XI over the past year. He has emerged as a key middle-order batter, most notably during last year’s Asia Cup, where he played a crucial role in India’s title win, including a match-defining half-century in the final against Pakistan.

Surgery likely to rule Tilak Varma out of New Zealand T20Is, World Cup in doubt

Tilak felt abdominal discomfort while playing for Hyderabad in Rajkot during the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He later consulted doctors at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru, who recommended surgery to address the issue.

The suggested recovery period of three to four weeks not only makes his availability for the New Zealand T20Is doubtful but also complicates India’s T20 World Cup campaign, which begins on February 7 against the USA.

If Tilak undergoes surgery, India’s selectors may need to reassess their squad composition. His absence would leave a gap in the middle order and could bring players like Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer back into contention, while Riyan Parag may also re-enter the discussion. With a major tournament approaching, the selection panel will likely balance experience and current form as they look to ensure adequate cover.

Tilak has been a reliable performer for India in T20Is since making his debut in August 2023. In 40 matches, he has scored 1,183 runs at an impressive average of 49.29 and a strike rate of 144.09, including two centuries and six fifties. He has also contributed with the ball, picking up three wickets with his part-time bowling.
