Earlier, American batsman Monank Patel, who was born in India, led the way with the bat with his first T20I half-century, and Andries Gous chipped in with a useful 35. The pair was coasting towards the total when Pakistan struck again in rapid succession. The USA managed to stay in the game despite losing wickets, seeing their run rate decline towards the end, and needing 12 runs off of the final three balls. The runner-ups from the previous edition and the 2009 winners lost the toss and thrown in to bat first, which did not go well at all.
