Chhetri Shares Emotional Farewell Decision with Family: ‘Even They Couldn’t Explain the Tears’
“When I decided that this would be my last game, I told my family. Dad was typical. He was relieved and thrilled. It was my wife, strangely enough. I told her, ‘You used to badger me about there being too many games and too much pressure. Now I’m telling you that I won’t be playing for my country after this game. Even they couldn’t explain why there were tears. It wasn’t that I was weary or feeling anything in particular. ‘No Player Has Received More Love from Fans Than Me… It’s Time for the Next No. 9’
“I’ll make a contentious statement. I don’t believe I know of any other athlete that has had as much support, love, and admiration from our nation’s supporters as I have. People often talk about who scored the highest on this or that, but I believe that the one area in which I truly excelled and was well-cared for was the love and affection I received. The next Number 9 needs to be seen in our nation, Sunil Chhetri continued.
