Indian Sports Ministry Funds 28 Athletes for World Athletics

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) will provide funding for the Indian contingent consisting of 28 athletes participating in the World Athletics Championships starting on August 19 in Budapest, Hungary.

The Indian contingent, which includes coaches and support staff, totals 42 members and will compete against top athletes from around the world.

In the previous edition, six Indian athletes reached the finals and three secured top-eight finishes, with Neeraj Chopra winning the silver medal in javelin throw.

The funding will cover training, accommodation, airfare, visas, and Out of Pocket Allowance, as stated by MYAS in a media release.

Among the 28 athletes, 13 are part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), while 15 will make their debut at the World Championships.

Shaili Singh, aged 19, is the youngest squad member making her senior World Championships debut, having previously won a silver medal at the U20 World Athletics Championships.

The list of Indian athletes competing in the World Athletics Championships includes various events such as hurdles, jumps, throws, and races.

As per the press release, in the previous edition, a total of 6 individuals reached the finals at the World Championships in 2022 with 3 of them making it to TOP 8 Finishes & Neeraj returning with a historic silver medal. This was India’s best performance in any edition of the World Athletics Championships.
