In test cricket, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma break Pakistan’s world record

India Women and South Africa Women have kicked off their one-off Test match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium today. Choosing to bat first, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma have fully capitalized on the ideal batting conditions.

South Africa Women’s tour of India has not gone as planned. After a 3-0 loss in the ODI series, their start in the one-off Test match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai has been far from ideal. Losing the toss, the visitors needed early breakthroughs, but India’s opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma took advantage of the favorable conditions to set a new world record.

Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma Set records with centuries in One-Off Test

Both batters smashed centuries, not only setting India’s highest-ever partnership for any wicket but also achieving the best opening partnership in Women’s Test cricket. They broke the 20-year-old world record held by Pakistan Women’s Kiran Baluch and Sajjida Shah, who had added 241 runs for the opening wicket against West Indies Women in Karachi in 2004. Smriti and Shafali narrowly missed the all-time record for the highest partnership for any wicket in Women’s Test cricket by just 18 runs.
