Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer Must Feature in India’s T20I Plans Ahead, Beginning with the Asia Cup

Chairman Ajit Agarkar firmly stated there is currently no place for Shreyas Iyer in Test cricket.
In ODIs, he remains a backup option when regulars like Virat Kohli suffer untimely injuries.
Rohit Sharma called Shreyas late at night after Kohli injured his knee before England series.
Shreyas now eyes the Asia Cup as a gateway to next year’s T20 World Cup.

In earlier years, Shreyas Iyer would be an automatic choice in India’s white-ball cricket line-ups.

However, India’s bench strength has grown, with talented batsmen emerging rapidly across different batting positions.
Since December 2023, Shreyas hasn’t played a T20I, hinting selectors might have moved beyond him.
India’s current T20 side has exceptional openers, an untouchable captain, and in-form middle-order floaters like Rinku Singh.
Competition has pushed Shreyas towards the tail of the queue, forcing him to prove himself again.

Shreyas’ IPL 2025 form strengthens his case, showcasing batting brilliance and outstanding leadership qualities.

He scored 604 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.
He hit 43 fours and 39 sixes, delivering six fifties without topping overall scoring charts.
His fearless stroke against Jasprit Bumrah in playoffs earned AB de Villiers’ highest possible praise.
That yorker deflection to the boundary displayed his composure, timing, and unmatched situational awareness under pressure.

Against fast bowling, Shreyas improved his strike rate from 145.7 in 2024 to 188 in 2025.

He averaged 44.1 this season, compared to 24.9 last year against pace bowlers consistently challenging him.
His short-ball weakness vanished, scoring 69 runs at 172.5 strike rate, losing his wicket only once.
These improvements complete his profile as one of the finest limited-overs batsmen in the current era.
Selectors could find his consistency, adaptability, and fearlessness impossible to overlook for India’s T20I future plans.
