Indian cricket team batter Shreyas Iyer has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will be taking a break from red-ball cricket due to persistent stiffness and fatigue in his back. Iyer, who was leading India A as captain, withdrew from the second unofficial Test against Australia A after consulting chief selector Ajit Agarkar. He sent a formal mail to the BCCI explaining his physical struggles, making his intentions regarding red-ball cricket clear. This decision comes after careful consideration of his long-term fitness and ability to handle the demands of multi-day cricket.

Shreyas Iyer Explains Reason to BCCI
Shreyas Iyer reportedly told selectors that his body cannot endure the stress and physical toll required in red-ball cricket anymore. He explained that he struggles to remain on the field for more than four consecutive days due to stiffness and fatigue in his back, which affects both his performance and health. Iyer emphasized that he will participate in red-ball cricket only when his body permits him to play extended formats without compromising fitness. This communication has provided the selectors with clarity regarding his future participation in longer formats, ensuring no ambiguity regarding his availability.
Iyer was considered for upcoming Test matches against West Indies and had been included in the India A squad to regain match practice before the series. However, following his formal request to the BCCI, he will no longer participate in the series or other red-ball fixtures in the immediate months. His withdrawal leaves a gap in the squad that selectors may need to fill with another promising batter. Despite missing the second Test, Iyer had participated in the first India A match against Australia A, scoring 8 and 13 runs, providing some match practice while also experiencing the challenges of red-ball cricket.

Fitness and Future Plans
According to sources, Iyer will continue to assess his body in consultation with team physios and trainers, taking decisions on future red-ball participation based on his physical condition. This proactive approach highlights his focus on maintaining long-term fitness rather than risking injury in high-intensity multi-day cricket. By taking this break now, Iyer aims to preserve his body for future opportunities and ensure he can contribute effectively when physically prepared to play extended formats.
Shreyas Iyer’s decision reflects a growing trend among players to manage workloads and prioritize health in professional cricket. His communication with the BCCI sets a transparent precedent for handling personal fitness and career planning. While his absence affects immediate squad composition, it underscores his commitment to returning stronger when physically ready. This decision also allows selectors and team management to plan ahead, ensuring that team performance remains balanced despite his temporary absence from red-ball cricket.
