The Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics officially began with a glittering opening ceremony at Milan’s iconic San Siro Stadium, Italy on Friday, February 6, 2026. Although organisers kept most details under wraps, the ceremony revolved around a central theme of harmony and connected Italy’s financial capital with the snow-covered Alpine venues. Starting at 1900 GMT, the three-hour spectacle launched what organisers describe as the most geographically dispersed Winter Games in Olympic history, spanning the Alps and the Dolomites.
The ceremony also introduced a fresh Olympic tradition. For the first time, athletes did not parade in a single stadium. Instead, nearly 2,900 competitors marched in venues closest to their competition sites, including Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno, and Predazzo. Organisers said this approach aimed to reduce travel, support athlete well-being, and still maintain a unified narrative across multiple locations.
A Ceremony Rooted in Harmony and Modern Italy
Although the creative details remained secret until the final moments, the message of unity stood out throughout the ceremony. Creative director Marco Balich said harmony guided the entire production, linking Milan’s urban energy with the natural beauty of Italy’s mountain regions. As a result, the event blended technology, culture, and landscape into a cohesive visual story that reached far beyond the stadium.
Balich also said the ceremony aimed to present a modern vision of Italy. Instead of leaning on nostalgic imagery, the organisers focused on innovation and the future. Within that framework, the ceremony celebrated Italy’s design and fashion legacy, including a tribute to legendary designer Giorgio Armani, who passed away last year. Performances by American singer Mariah Carey, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, and Chinese pianist Lang Lang further boosted the ceremony’s global appeal.

Global focus, shifting politics, and Olympic spirit
Meanwhile, the opening ceremony attracted a global audience of hundreds of millions and welcomed dozens of international dignitaries. US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended a leaders’ dinner hosted by International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry. The Milan–Cortina Games mark the first Olympics under Coventry’s leadership since her election in March, with Los Angeles set to host the next Games in 2028.
At the same time, political tensions surfaced quietly around the event. Coventry expressed hope that organisers and participants would set aside any external controversies during the February 6–22 Games. Her remarks followed criticism in Italy after reports suggested that agents from the US immigration enforcement agency ICE would hold an advisory role. Italian authorities later denied that US agents would have any operational authority in the country.
Some athletes also drew attention, as American snowboard champion Chloe Kim highlighted diversity and hope in a social media post after arriving in Italy. Meanwhile, the Olympic flame reached Milan on February 5, with organisers keeping the final torchbearers secret. Reports suggested Italian legends Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni could take the honour, while early competition saw one women’s ice hockey match postponed due to illness.
