BCCI Confirms Mohammed Shami Out of T20 World Cup 2024

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami’s eagerly awaited return to the cricket field is set to face a significant delay as he recovers from an ankle surgery performed in London in February. Shami, who battled through ankle issues during the ODI World Cup in India, underwent the surgery on February 26 and is currently recuperating in India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, provided a crucial update on Shami’s return, revealing that the speedster will likely come back during the home series against Bangladesh in September.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah shares timeline for Mohammed Shami’s comeback

Speaking to the media in Dharamsala, Jay Shah stated, “Shami’s surgery is done, he is back in India. Shami’s return is likely for the home series against Bangladesh.” The timeline places Shami’s return after the T20 World Cup scheduled for June, meaning the Indian speedster will miss the global tournament. Shah also touched upon the injury status of batsman KL Rahul, who received an injection and has commenced rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Shah further discussed the potential return of wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in IPL 2024. “He is batting well, he is keeping well. We will declare him fit very soon. If he can play in the T20 World Cup for us, that will be a big thing. He is a big asset for us. If he can keep, he can play in the World Cup. Let’s see how he does in the IPL,” said Shah on Pant’s recovery and potential participation in the upcoming tournaments.

Shami’s IPL 2024 participation uncertain

A BCCI source had previously mentioned that the ankle injections did not yield the expected results, leading to the unavoidable decision of surgery. Shami’s participation in the IPL remains uncertain, adding another layer of intrigue to his comeback journey.
