Ajit Agarkar explained why the selectors replaced Rishabh Pant with KL Rahul as India’s Test vice-captain for the one-off match against Afghanistan. He said the team management wanted Pant to focus fully on becoming the best Test batter possible. Agarkar stressed that the decision had nothing to do with Pant’s place in the Test team.
Pant has played several match-winning innings for India in Test cricket with his aggressive batting style. However, recent concerns over his leadership performance, especially during IPL 2026 with Lucknow Super Giants struggling at the bottom of the table, reportedly influenced the decision. The selectors decided to hand the vice-captaincy role to a more experienced option.
The selectors also dropped Pant from India’s ODI squad and included Ishan Kishan instead. Kishan earned his place after returning strongly to the T20I side and contributing to India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign. He has also impressed with explosive performances for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026.

KL Rahul Gets Vice-Captain Role as Rishabh Pant Focuses on Batting
Agarkar clarified that the management still considers Pant one of India’s most important Test batters. He praised Pant’s performances in England before injury interrupted his tour and said the selectors remain confident about his red-ball future. According to Agarkar, the team simply wants Pant to focus more on his batting rather than leadership responsibilities.
The chief selector highlighted KL Rahul’s previous captaincy experience as the main reason behind the leadership change. Rahul has already captained India in three Test matches and provides stability if captain Shubman Gill becomes unavailable due to injury. Agarkar said the selectors felt Rahul’s experience would benefit the team in difficult situations.
Agarkar also spoke about the absence of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel from the Test and ODI squads respectively. He explained that Jadeja was only rested for the Afghanistan Test because of a knee issue, while the selectors wanted to test younger players before future tournaments. He confirmed that Jadeja still remains India’s first-choice spinner in Test cricket.
The selectors further discussed injury updates and squad planning for the future. Agarkar revealed that Mohammed Shami is currently focusing mainly on T20 cricket due to fitness concerns, while Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi came close to selection after strong domestic performances. Meanwhile, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said IPL franchises currently manage player fitness, though BCCI medical staff continue monitoring centrally contracted players.
