Italy Clinch Landmark T20I Win Over Ireland, Their First Against a Test Nation

Italy defeated Ireland by four wickets in the third T20I at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai on Monday to register their first-ever victory over a Test-playing nation. Despite the historic achievement, Italy lost the three-match series 1–2. Italy are ranked 28th in the ICC T20I standings, while Ireland sit at 11th place.

Grant Stewart produced a stunning finish to guide Italy to victory, smashing three consecutive sixes in the final over to seal the chase with three balls remaining. He remained unbeaten on 33 off 19 balls, striking five boundaries in a match-winning knock.

Madsen’s 39 Keeps Italy in the Hunt

Italy chased a target of 155 but lost an early wicket in the opening over. Captain Wayne Madsen steadied the innings with a fighting 39 off 30 deliveries to finish as the top scorer for his side.

The Italian side needed 44 runs from the final four overs when Gian-Piero Meade departed for 22. Marcus Campipiano joined Stewart at the crease, and the pair managed to keep Italy in the hunt despite mounting pressure.

Stewart and Campipiano added 14 runs in the next two overs, leaving Italy needing 30 runs from the final two. They then collected 14 runs from Mark Adair’s penultimate over to set up a tense finish.

Italy required 16 runs in the final over when Stewart turned the game on its head. He struck Barry McCarthy for three sixes off the first three deliveries to complete a dramatic win for his team.

Ireland Post 154 as Stirling Leads Batting, Kalugamage Shines for Italy

Earlier, Ireland posted 154 after Italy opted to bowl first. Paul Stirling led the batting effort with 45 off 38 balls, while Gareth Delany and Mark Adair added useful runs in the middle order. Crishan Kalugamage starred with the ball for Italy, claiming 3 for 28.

Italy will make their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup debut next month, and this historic win provides a major confidence boost ahead of the tournament. Placed in Group C, Italy will face England, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Nepal, beginning their campaign against Bangladesh on February 9.
