Hayden Criticizes Kohli’s Interactions with Umpires During IPL Match

During the IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Matthew Hayden criticized Virat Kohli for his frequent interactions with the umpires. Kohli, who was notably active on the field, engaged with the officials more often than the team captain, Faf du Plessis. This behavior did not sit well with the former Australian opener, who voiced his disapproval during the live broadcast. The specific incident occurred in the 12th over of CSK’s chase when Kohli approached the umpires for a discussion. Hayden noted that Kohli’s frequent ‘interjections’ were unnecessary and not his responsibility.

Matthew Hayden criticized Virat Kohli’s frequent interactions with the umpires, stating, “There’s way too much interjection from Virat Kohli. He is not the captain and he should not be in those conversations with the umpire.” During Sunday’s match, Kohli was highly emotional, expressing intense reactions both while batting and on the field. He celebrated each wicket enthusiastically, reminiscent of his captaincy days.

Kohli’s Involvement and Key Advice in the Final Overs

In the penultimate over, Kohli intervened after an overthrow allowed Dhoni and Jadeja to take an extra run, approaching the umpire while du Plessis looked on in disbelief. Kohli’s active role continued when, in the final over, he ran from long-on to admonish Yash Dayal for bowling a full toss to Dhoni. Kohli advised Dayal to bowl a slower delivery instead of a yorker, which proved successful as Dhoni was dismissed on the next ball, helping to contain Jadeja and prevent a last-minute CSK victory.

When Jadeja missed the final ball, a jubilant Kohli erupted in celebration near the boundary line. This intense and animated version of Kohli, reminiscent of his fierce attitude during the “60 overs of hell” pledge against England, had been missing for a while. On this crucial match evening, his fiery spirit was on full display. Eager to end RCB’s long wait for an IPL title, Kohli’s relentless energy and aggressive approach will be a formidable challenge for any opposition in the remaining matches.
