India’s World Cup-winning star stunned as Hardik Pandya removed and demoted in Asia Cup

The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee announced India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad on Tuesday, including Hardik Pandya but removing him from the vice-captaincy role. Shubman Gill has been named as vice-captain under skipper Suryakumar Yadav, while notable players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were left out, raising eyebrows among fans and experts alike.

Madan Lal questioned exclusion of Jaiswal and Hardik Pandya’s demotion

Former India cricketer Madan Lal expressed disappointment at Yashasvi Jaiswal’s exclusion from the squad. He said a talented player like Jaiswal should not have been left out of the team. Madan Lal also questioned the selection committee for removing Hardik Pandya from the vice-captaincy role.

Hardik Pandya lost vice-captaincy earlier at 2024 World Cup

Hardik Pandya has been included in the squad but no longer holds the vice-captaincy position. The 1983 World Cup winner reminded that Pandya already lost the role during the 2024 World Cup. He expressed confusion over why Pandya was again overlooked for a leadership role.

Gill considered a strong choice for vice-captain

Madan Lal said Shubman Gill is a good choice because of his consistent batting performances. He added Gill could soon play across all three formats, given his form and potential. According to him, match-winning players must always be part of the squad to strengthen India’s chances.

India aims to defend Asia Cup title in UAE

The 2025 Asia Cup will be hosted in the UAE from September 9 to 28. India, as defending champions, will enter the tournament with a strong squad balance. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, India’s dominant T20I opening pair, are also included in the roster.
