Dhoni’s iconic one-handed move settles Bangladesh clash

Who can forget Hardik Pandya holding his nerve and MS Dhoni’s lightning-fast, no-glove run-out that clinched a one-run win against Bangladesh? That night delivered drama, but the tension between the two sides had been building for years.

Back in January 2010, India’s stand-in captain Virender Sehwag stirred controversy before the Chittagong Test. He called Bangladesh an “ordinary side” and claimed they lacked the bowling strength to dismiss India twice. India then backed his words on the field, cruising to a 113-run victory. That remark, however, planted the first seeds of rivalry.

Five years later, the rivalry intensified at the 2015 ODI World Cup. In the Melbourne quarterfinal, Rohit Sharma survived a disputed no-ball call when he was on 90. Replays later showed the decision was incorrect. Rohit made Bangladesh pay. He scored 137 and powered India to a 109-run win.

India falter with the bat, Bangladesh push back

As a result, when India met Bangladesh in the 2016 T20 World Cup Super 10 match in Bengaluru, emotions ran high. Bangladesh faced near elimination, while India needed a win after losing to New Zealand.

After Mashrafe Mortaza sent India in, the hosts struggled to build momentum on a slow pitch. The top five crossed double figures but failed to convert starts. Suresh Raina top-scored with 30. India scraped to 146 for 7, with Virat Kohli and Raina adding the only meaningful stand.

Bangladesh began the chase confidently. Tamim Iqbal anchored the innings, while Sabbir Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan increased the tempo. However, MS Dhoni responded decisively. He rotated his spinners—R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Raina—with precision. Together, they claimed five wickets and slowed the run flow.

Final-over drama and Dhoni’s decisive strike

Still, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim forced the match into the final over. Bangladesh needed 11 runs with four wickets in hand. With his frontline bowlers spent, Dhoni handed the ball to Hardik Pandya.

The over turned chaotic. Mushfiqur struck two boundaries and celebrated early. The moment proved costly. He fell attempting another big hit. Mahmudullah followed on the next ball after Dhoni repositioned his best fielder at deep mid-wicket.

That left two runs needed from the final delivery. As Pandya prepared to bowl, Dhoni quietly removed his right glove. The batter missed the ball. Mustafizur Rahman sprinted for the bye. Dhoni charged forward and whipped the bails off in one swift motion.

Bangladesh fell short by inches. India secured a stunning one-run victory. Dhoni once again showcased his sharp instincts under pressure. The match did more than decide points—it delivered a T20 World Cup classic that still echoes in cricket history.
