As speculation intensifies over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, the BCCI has directed both players to participate in domestic cricket to remain eligible for national selection. Since retiring from Tests and T20Is, the duo only competes in the 50-over format, raising questions about their match fitness. Ahead of India’s ODI series against South Africa, discussions about their participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy have gained momentum.

BCCI Sets Clear Selection Guidelines
According to The Indian Express, the BCCI and team management informed both players that domestic cricket participation is mandatory for selection. Rohit Sharma has already told the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) about his availability for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, Virat Kohli has not yet confirmed his participation in the one-day domestic tournament. The board aims to ensure both veterans maintain match readiness ahead of crucial international fixtures.
Focus on Fitness and Commitment
Sources within the BCCI revealed that players who have retired from certain formats must remain active in domestic competitions to stay fit. Previously, after India’s poor performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, both Kohli and Rohit returned to play in the Ranji Trophy. Their involvement then demonstrated their commitment to Indian cricket, and a similar expectation has now been set for their ODI selection.
Rohit’s Dedication Towards Domestic Cricket
Rohit Sharma’s dedication is evident, as he has also expressed willingness to play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy starting November 26. His decision reflects a strong desire to stay in rhythm and lead by example. Kohli, meanwhile, is expected to make a final call soon. The BCCI has reiterated that consistent domestic performances remain key for selection in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup plans.
BCCI selection chief Ajit Agarkar recently reminded players about the importance of playing domestic cricket during breaks. He emphasized that regular domestic participation keeps players sharp and competitive. Both Kohli and Rohit returned to the Indian team after the Champions Trophy and featured in the ODI series against Australia, where Rohit impressed with a fifty and a century, while Kohli scored a steady 74 in the final game.
