Mitchell Marsh Ruled Out of Champions Trophy Due to Back Injury

Mitchell Marsh has been sidelined from the Champions Trophy. Due to a back injury and is unlikely to return for the rest of the season. Which may also impact his IPL stint with Lucknow Super Giants.

Marsh has had a challenging season, losing his Test spot to Beau Webster for the final match against India at the SCG. He scored 73 runs across seven innings and had a limited role with the ball during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His fitness was a recurring concern throughout the five-Test series.

Mitchell Marsh to Miss Champions Trophy

The statement said, “The National Selection Panel and the Australian men’s medical team have ruled Mitchell Marsh out of the upcoming ICC Men’s Champion’s Trophy. Due to ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction. The injury has not responded well to rehabilitation.”

“His lower back pain flared up in recent weeks, prompting the NSP to decide that Marsh needs a longer period of rehabilitation. Marsh will now rest and undergo further rehabilitation as part of his return-to-play plan. The NSP will meet soon to choose a replacement for Marsh.”

Mitchell Marsh’s Absence Forces Australia to Reevaluate Top-Order Options

Australia’s plans for the top-order will be affected by the absence of Mitchell Marsh, who has been leading the ODI side in Pat Cummins’ absence and is also the T20I captain. Jake Fraser-McGurk is a possible replacement. Despite his struggles earlier this season against Pakistan and his underwhelming performance in the BBL until the final match. However, his explosive batting at No. 3 could make him a direct replacement for Marsh. Even though he has yet to face 50 or more balls in List A cricket and has passed 50 just twice in 22 innings.

Australia’s squad already has ample batting cover, including backup wicketkeeper Alex Carey. And they may opt for another allrounder to replace Marsh. Will Sutherland, who played ODI cricket last year, would have been included in the UK tour in September had he not been sidelined by a back injury. Webster has not played ODI cricket yet but could be called upon if required. Additionally, Cooper Connolly, a spin-bowling allrounder, is available. Though Australia already has four batters who can bowl spin in the squad. Cameron Green, still recovering from back surgery in October, remains unavailable.
