Asian Games 2026: Vithya Ramraj Bags 400m Hurdles Bronze, Gulveer Wins 1500m Silver

Indian athletes delivered strong performances in athletics at the Asian Games 2026 on Monday. Gulveer Singh won the silver medal in the men’s 1500m final with a personal-best time of 3:36.72. Vithya Ramraj also secured bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles after clocking 54.75 seconds. Her performance helped her break the long-standing national record associated with PT Usha. India also had Avinash Sable and Anu Raghavan competing in their respective events.

Vithya Ramraj Sets New National Record With Bronze

Vithya Ramraj produced an impressive run in the women’s 400m hurdles final. She completed the race in 54.75 seconds to finish third and claim the bronze medal. Her timing also surpassed PT Usha’s national mark of 55.42 seconds, which had stood since 1984. Vithya had equalled the record in 2023 before improving it at the Asian Games. Mariam Kareem of the UAE won gold in 54.31 seconds, while Kazakhstan’s Adelina Zems took silver in 54.58 seconds.

Vithya maintained a strong pace from the beginning and stayed among the medal contenders throughout the race. She cleared all 10 hurdles efficiently and remained in contention for the top two positions. However, Kareem and Zems produced faster finishes in the final stretch. Vithya eventually settled for bronze but finished with a major personal achievement. Her new national record added another memorable moment to India’s athletics campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Gulveer Singh Clinches Silver With Personal Best

Gulveer Singh secured his second silver medal of the ongoing Asian Games after finishing second in the men’s 1500m final. He recorded a personal best of 3:36.72 in a competitive race. Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa claimed the gold medal, while compatriot Nagiya Mori finished third with 3:37.92. Indian runner Yoonus Shah also competed in the final and finished ninth with a time of 3:43.88. Gulveer had earlier won silver in the 10,000m event at these Games.

India also featured in the women’s 400m hurdles through Anu Raghavan. She finished fifth but ended the race with a personal-best timing of 55.88 seconds. Although she missed the podium, Raghavan improved her previous best on the Asian Games stage. Avinash Sable also competed in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final but finished fourth. Overall, the athletics events produced multiple notable performances for the Indian contingent on Monday.
