Mohsin Naqvi Defends Asia Cup Trophy Act, BCCI Warns Him After ‘Cartoon-Like’ Gesture

The Asia Cup trophy reignited tensions on Tuesday as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi clashed directly with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Naqvi carried the trophy and winners’ medals away from the post-final ceremony in Dubai and locked them inside his hotel room. BCCI officials confronted him during an Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting and demanded the trophy’s immediate transfer to India. Instead of returning it, Naqvi stood firm and intensified the conflict.

Asia Cup Trophy Dispute Intensifies

BCCI representatives Rajiv Shukla and Ashish Shelar pressed Naqvi repeatedly to release the Asia Cup trophy and medals. They reminded him that the ACC owns the trophy and that India earned it on the field. Naqvi refused every demand and accused the Indian team of embarrassing him during the final presentation. He explained that he stepped onto the podium expecting to hand the trophy to Suryakumar Yadav’s team but waited in vain. According to Naqvi, the moment left him “looking like a cartoon,” and he now resists returning the silverware.

Shukla and Shelar declared that Naqvi must place the trophy inside the ACC’s Dubai office before India collects it formally. They emphasized that no chairman can claim ownership of a continental trophy. Ashish Shelar walked out briefly to show BCCI’s frustration, then returned and warned that India would escalate the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) if Naqvi stalled further. Both officials pressed their demands firmly and insisted that Naqvi end the drama immediately.

ACC Meeting Overshadowed by Trophy Row

The trophy row dominated the ACC meeting and pushed aside its original agenda of electing a Vice-Chairman. Naqvi tried to deflect the matter and suggested discussing it later, but BCCI members refused to delay the handover. Tempers flared as the debate stretched on, forcing the council to postpone its planned vote. Instead of finalizing leadership, members left the meeting embroiled in a trophy controversy that overshadowed cricket administration.

Ongoing Standoff Raises Bigger Concerns

Naqvi continues to keep the Asia Cup trophy in his hotel room, while BCCI grows louder in its demand for the prize. The unresolved standoff exposes cracks within the ACC and sharpens the rivalry between the Indian and Pakistani boards. Naqvi claims respect and recognition for his role as PCB chairman, but BCCI rejects that reasoning and asserts India’s full right over the trophy. Until both sides resolve the matter, the Asia Cup trophy will remain locked in conflict rather than displayed in India’s cabinet.
