FIFA slams racial abuse of Antoine Semenyo during Premier League opener against Liverpool

FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the racial abuse targeted at Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo during the Liverpool clash. Infantino stressed that racism has no place in football and praised Semenyo’s strength on the pitch. FIFA’s Players’ Voice Panel confirmed it would stay in touch with the Ghanaian forward and extend support.

Incident at Anfield Stadium

The abuse happened during the first half at Anfield, forcing referee Anthony Taylor to halt the game. Taylor spoke with both captains and managers before resuming play as fans showed solidarity with Semenyo. Despite the incident, the Bournemouth striker remained composed and continued to play with determination.

Police Action and Arrest

Merseyside Police quickly identified and ejected a 47-year-old man from Anfield after the abuse. The following day, police confirmed his arrest on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. Officials reiterated that racial discrimination inside stadiums would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Support From FIFA and Football Community

Semenyo thanked his teammates, Liverpool players, referees, and supporters for standing by him during the ordeal. Infantino praised Semenyo’s courage, calling him a symbol of dignity and strength for players worldwide. FIFA assured that it would monitor the case closely and support him against further abuse.

Online Abuse and FIFA–Premier League Warning

After the game, Semenyo revealed he also faced racial abuse online from anonymous users. Premier League CEO Richard Masters warned that offenders risk lifetime stadium bans and criminal prosecution. Despite the negativity, Semenyo scored twice, inspiring Bournemouth’s comeback, though Liverpool sealed a 4-2 victory with late goals.
