Healy sets retirement timeline after India series
Australia women’s captain Alyssa Healy has confirmed that she will retire from international cricket after the upcoming multi-format series against India. The 35-year-old wicketkeeper-batter said the decision feels right, even though her love for playing for Australia remains strong. Healy explained that while her passion is intact, the competitive edge that drove her for more than a decade has begun to fade, prompting her to step away at this stage of her career.
Healy will play her final matches for Australia in three one-day internationals and a solitary Test against India in February and March. She had earlier announced her retirement from T20 internationals, making the India series her last appearance in national colours across formats. “I will genuinely miss my teammates, the team song, and walking out to open the batting for Australia,” she said, reflecting on her long journey.
A glittering career and lasting legacy
Healy has been a cornerstone of Australia’s dominance in women’s cricket for nearly 15 years. She featured in two ODI World Cup victories and six T20 World Cup triumphs, playing a key role in one of the most successful eras in the sport. She took over the captaincy in late 2023 following the retirement of Meg Lanning and continued to lead with the same intensity and standards that defined her playing career.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led tributes, calling Healy a true legend who shone as a batter, wicketkeeper, and captain. He also highlighted her influence off the field, crediting her with helping grow women’s cricket and inspiring the next generation.
Healy made her international debut in 2010 and went on to score 3,563 runs in one-day internationals, including seven centuries, and 3,054 runs in T20 internationals. Behind the stumps, she completed 275 dismissals, underlining her all-round impact. Despite her long career, her final appearance will be just her 11th Test, a reminder of how limited opportunities in the longest format have been for women’s cricketers during much of her era.
