Possible successors to Kejriwal as Delhi’s next Chief Minister

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s announcement on Sunday regarding his resignation has fueled speculation about his possible successor. Several senior AAP leaders’ names have emerged, including sitting Delhi legislators such as Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, Gopal Rai, and Imran Hussain. There is also a chance that Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, might take up the position. Additionally, some leaders have suggested that a Dalit leader could be appointed as the next Chief Minister. Although no specific names were mentioned. Kejriwal has ruled out the possibility of his former deputy, Manish Sisodia, succeeding him. Confirming instead that an AAP member will hold the position until the elections.

Delhi Chief Minister Term and Sisodia’s Campaign Role

The current term of the Delhi Assembly will expire on February 11, 2025, following the last election held on February 8, 2020. Where AAP secured 62 seats and BJP won 8 in the 70-member assembly. Meanwhile, Manish Sisodia has announced that he will campaign alongside Arvind Kejriwal, focusing on honesty as their key message. He has also stated that he will not assume any official post until he is cleared by the public.

Atishi Among Leading Contenders for CM Post

Atishi is a prominent candidate for the chief ministerial role, known for her leadership in crucial departments such as education, finance, revenue, and law. Arvind Kejriwal had nominated her to hoist the national flag on Independence Day on his behalf, but the Delhi Lieutenant Governor overruled the nomination, assigning Kailash Gahlot for the task instead.

Delhi Assembly Election Preparation

Arvind Kejriwal, who took office as Chief Minister for the third time on February 16. First assuming the role in 2013, will face re-election in February 2025. According to a Hindustan Times report, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a special summary revision of the photo electoral roll in August to align with the anticipated election schedule. The revision process is set to conclude by early January 2025. With the final publication of the electoral rolls planned for January 6, 2025.
