Priyanka Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Assam, accusing it of using welfare schemes to influence people’s freedom of expression. While addressing her first election rally in Nazira, she directly questioned the intent behind such schemes. According to her, the government links financial aid with political participation, which raises serious concerns. For instance, women receiving monetary benefits often face pressure to attend BJP events, including rallies of Narendra Modi. As a result, she argued that welfare measures lose their true purpose and begin to serve political interests instead.
Moreover, Gandhi highlighted how this situation creates stress among beneficiaries, especially women. In many cases, they must choose between managing household responsibilities, earning a livelihood, or attending political gatherings. Consequently, this pressure disrupts their daily lives and limits their freedom of choice. She emphasized that welfare schemes should empower citizens rather than control them. Therefore, she insisted that people must receive benefits without any political conditions attached, ensuring fairness and dignity.
Welfare scheme coercion allegations
Meanwhile, Gandhi also raised concerns about the treatment of Congress workers in the state. She alleged that authorities pressure them to attend political events and, in some instances, use threats and intimidation. Such actions, she noted, weaken democratic values and restrict political freedom. At the same time, she criticized the broader system, stating that leaders must separate governance from political gain.
In addition, she accused the government of promoting corruption and favoring large industrial groups. According to her, valuable land and resources are being handed over to powerful entities, which increases inequality. Furthermore, she pointed out the presence of syndicates that impose unofficial charges on essential goods. This, in turn, raises the cost of living and affects common citizens the most. Hence, she urged for greater transparency and accountability in governance.

Political pitch and promises in Assam
On the other hand, Gandhi referred to Zubeen Garg and spoke about building a stronger and more inclusive Assam. She said her party aims to create a state where development and cultural identity go hand in hand. Additionally, she criticized the idea of a “double-engine government,” calling it “double slavery” and arguing that it limits people’s independence. Through her speech, she encouraged voters to demand a government that respects their rights and dignity.
Finally, she outlined key promises from the party’s manifesto to attract public support. These include justice for Zubeen Garg within 100 days, land rights for nearly one million indigenous people, and ₹25 lakh health insurance for families. Along with this, she promised ₹50,000 financial assistance for women entrepreneurs and ₹1,250 monthly support for senior citizens. Moving forward, she plans to address more rallies in Tingkhong and Khowang, aiming to strengthen support for Congress and its alliance partners.
