Two Lok Sabha MPs Refuse Salary: Meet the Lawmakers Who Decline Pay

An RTI response accessed by India Today revealed a rare decision among Lok Sabha MPs. Only two MPs in the current Lok Sabha have voluntarily chosen not to draw salaries. One MP belongs to the BJP, and the other represents the Congress party in Parliament. Most MPs usually support salary and perks increases across party lines in India. However, these two lawmakers have consciously decided to forgo all monetary remuneration entirely. The two MPs represent constituencies separated by 2,575 kilometres – Kurukshetra and Inner Manipur. Naveen Jindal from Kurukshetra has also refused all official perks and allowances provided by the government.

Lok Sabha MPs Forego Salary, Set Rare Ethical Example

Dr Bimol Akoijam Angomcha from Inner Manipur only declined the salary. Their decisions highlight rare principle-driven choices in India’s current parliamentary landscape. This step stands out in the 18th Lok Sabha where nearly all MPs draw full remuneration. According to their election affidavits, the MPs come from very different financial backgrounds entirely. Naveen Jindal declared assets worth ₹1,241 crore, making him one of the wealthiest MPs. Dr Angomcha declared assets of around ₹97 lakh, representing a modest financial profile. Jindal is far from being the richest; Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani declared assets over ₹5,705 crore. BJP MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy follows with declared assets exceeding ₹4,568 crore.

Currently, 481 of 543 Lok Sabha MPs are listed as drawing salaries from the government regularly. The RTI does not clarify the status of the remaining MPs beyond these 481 members. Most MPs rely on salaries and allowances to fund official duties and constituency responsibilities. The voluntary refusal by these two MPs highlights ethics and public service above financial gain. Their decision has attracted media attention and public appreciation across party affiliations in India. The RTI response confirms their voluntary exclusion from standard pay and perks entirely. Their actions demonstrate that personal wealth or financial necessity does not dictate ethical choices. They set a rare example of integrity and principle-driven service in modern parliamentary practice.
