Trump scraps ruling on greenhouse gas health risks

President Donald Trump overturned a major Obama era climate science ruling. The 2009 endangerment finding declared greenhouse gases harmful to public health. Federal agencies relied on that decision to regulate vehicle emissions. The White House called the move the largest deregulation in history. Officials argued the rollback would lower vehicle and energy costs.

Trump criticized the ruling as damaging to automakers and consumers. He also blamed the policy for raising prices across the industry. Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama warned the repeal would weaken protections. He further argued that Americans would face greater health and climate risks. In response, environmental groups quickly pledged to challenge the reversal in court.

Originally, the Environmental Protection Agency issued the finding in 2009. At that time, it identified six greenhouse gases as threats to human health. However, lawmakers failed to pass comprehensive climate legislation during that period. As a result, the EPA relied on the finding to regulate multiple sectors. Consequently, these rules covered vehicles, power plants, oil, gas, and landfills.

Trump climate rollback sparks legal fight

Trump officials claimed the repeal would save over one trillion dollars. They said automakers would reduce spending by thousands per vehicle. Environmental advocates disputed those projected financial savings. They warned consumers would face higher fuel costs long term. Analysts also predicted increased pollution and serious health impacts.

Legal experts expect prolonged court battles over the decision. States and nonprofit groups plan to file new lawsuits. The administration used the finding to limit stricter state laws. Some observers believe officials want Supreme Court review soon. A favorable ruling could permanently reshape federal climate authority.
