WASHINGTON, Jan 21 U.S. President Donald Trump arrives in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday and is set to press harder for U.S. control of Greenland, despite strong resistance from European leaders. His stance has widened rifts in transatlantic relations, marking one of the most serious diplomatic strains in decades.
Trump is expected to dominate discussions at the World Economic Forum (WEF), where global leaders have gathered to debate economic and geopolitical challenges. A minor electrical issue on his aircraft delayed his arrival by several hours, forcing a last-minute plane change.

Trump intensifies Greenland push at Davos
Trump said he will hold meetings on Greenland during the Davos summit and expressed confidence that a deal could eventually be reached. He described Greenland as critical to U.S. and NATO security interests, citing threats from Russia and China in the Arctic region. When asked how far he is willing to go to secure the territory, Trump declined to provide details.
In the lead-up to Davos, Trump repeatedly argued that the United States “needs Greenland” as a strategic defense outpost. He warned European governments opposing the move that they could face trade consequences and did not rule out military options. NATO leaders have cautioned that such actions could destabilize the alliance.
Economic message competes with diplomatic tensions
Trump traveled to Davos intending to showcase the strength of the U.S. economy. He is scheduled to deliver a keynote address highlighting domestic economic achievements, even as opinion polls reflect public dissatisfaction with economic conditions.
The White House said Trump will announce a housing proposal allowing Americans to use 401(k) retirement savings for home down payments. He will also urge the United States and Europe to abandon what his administration calls growth-stifling economic policies. During the visit, Trump plans bilateral meetings with the leaders of Switzerland, Poland, and Egypt.
Trump is set to return to Washington late Thursday after presiding over a ceremony for the Board of Peace, a group he formed to support Gaza’s redevelopment amid a fragile ceasefire.
