Trump’s Attempt to Indict Democratic Lawmakers Collapses After Grand Jury Refusal

President Donald Trump failed in his latest effort to pursue legal action against six Democratic lawmakers after a federal grand jury refused to indict them. The case marked another aggressive attempt by Trump to use the Department of Justice against his political opponents.

The six lawmakers — Sens. Mark Kelly and Elissa Slotkin, along with Reps. Jason Crow, Chrissy Houlahan, Chris Deluzio, and Maggie Goodlander — had released a video reminding US service members that they have the right to refuse illegal orders. Trump reacted angrily, calling them “traitors” and accusing them of sedition. He even suggested they could face the death penalty.

Trump faces setback as grand jury rejects charges

Trump’s administration backed the move. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth launched efforts targeting Kelly’s military retirement status, while prosecutors in Washington pushed for indictments. However, the grand jury rejected the case, dealing a setback to the president’s revenge-driven strategy. The decision highlighted a rare constitutional moment in which ordinary citizens on a grand jury resisted political pressure. Lawmakers involved in the case described the outcome as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.

Sen. Mark Kelly defended the video, stating that he and his colleagues simply reminded troops of their constitutional responsibilities. Rep. Maggie Goodlander called the grand jury’s decision “a win for the Constitution.” Meanwhile, Attorney General Pam Bondi publicly defended Trump and criticized Democrats, reinforcing concerns that the Justice Department increasingly aligns itself with the president’s political interests.
