‘TMC hatched conspiracies to stop Ram Navami celebrations’: PM Modi in Bengal

On Monday, the Calcutta High Court granted approval to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for organizing a procession on Ram Navami in Howrah city. During a rally in Balurghat, West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), alleging that it conspired to obstruct Ram Navami celebrations. Despite these efforts, Modi stated that the court had granted permission for Ram Navami processions to proceed with reverence and devotion, affirming that truth had prevailed. He extended his congratulations to the people of Bengal on this occasion.

PM Modi was alluding to the Calcutta High Court’s decision on Monday, which allowed the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to conduct a procession on Ram Navami in Howrah city while implementing specific conditions to ensure a peaceful event. The petitioners had sought permission for the procession, beginning from near Shibpur IIEST and concluding at Ramkrishnapur ferry ghat along the Hooghly river.

TMC Opposed to Proposed Ram Navami Procession Route

“Justice Jay Sengupta granted permission for the procession, specifying that it must proceed without any stops along the route and that no provocative slogans should be uttered on Ram Navami, scheduled for Wednesday.” The Mamata Banerjee government had cited unrest during last year’s procession, referring to an ongoing NIA investigation into the matter. As a result, the government proposed an alternative route for the procession, which the organizers contested, leading to their appeal in the high court.

Ram Navami festivities have evolved into a contentious arena for both the TMC and the BJP. Over the years, Ram Navami rallies in the state have transformed into significant political matters, marked by communal clashes, with both parties blaming each other for the violence. Voting in 42 Lok Sabha constituencies will occur over seven phases on April 19, 26, May 7, 13, 20, 25, and June 1.
