TMC MP Prakash Baraik Resigns from Rajya Sabha

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) faced another major setback on Thursday after Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Upper House. His departure followed the recent resignations of Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Sushmita Dev, taking the total number of TMC Rajya Sabha MPs who have quit within a week to three. Baraik’s resignation is expected to reduce the party’s strength in the Rajya Sabha to 10 members, raising fresh concerns about the party’s stability at the national level.

TMC Faces Deepening Crisis as Third Rajya Sabha MP Resigns in a Week

Sources indicated that the crisis may deepen further, as at least three more TMC Rajya Sabha MPs are reportedly considering resignation within the next week. Such exits could significantly weaken the party’s parliamentary presence and intensify the challenges facing TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.

The turmoil began on Monday when senior leader and Mamata Banerjee’s close aide, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, stepped down from the Rajya Sabha. His resignation came while Banerjee was in Delhi holding discussions with INDIA bloc leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, to formulate a broader opposition strategy against the BJP. The meetings also focused on assessing the party’s future after its disappointing performance in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

At the same time, Mamata Banerjee has been grappling with growing dissent within her legislative ranks. Reports suggest that 64 of the party’s 80 MLAs now support rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee. The rebel camp recently secured another victory when party legislators chose Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, a move that highlighted the weakening grip of the TMC leadership.

As divisions widened within the state unit, the unrest spread to Parliament. Roy’s resignation triggered a chain reaction, followed by Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik. Party insiders now fear that additional resignations in the coming days could deepen the political crisis confronting the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC.
