Tamil Nadu Health Minister Assures: No Need to Panic Over HMPV

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian has reassured the public about the recent detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the state, emphasizing that there is no cause for alarm. Two cases of HMPV have been reported, one in Chennai and another in Salem, with both patients recovering in stable condition.

Patients Recovering Well No Immediate Cause for Concern

Health authorities are closely monitoring two individuals, a 64-year-old cancer patient from Salem and a 45-year-old from Chennai Tamil Nadu. Minister Ma Subramanian assured that both patients are recovering well, emphasizing that there is no immediate reason for concern.

HMPV Identified in 2001 Low Severity Similar to Common Cold

“HMPV is not a new virus,” stated Subramanian, highlighting that it was first discovered in 2001. He explained that the virus, which mainly causes respiratory infections, presents symptoms similar to the common cold. Although it can impact individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, its overall severity remains low.

The health department is actively monitoring the two reported cases, with a focus on surveillance at the state’s international airports. “There is no need for widespread testing or panic. We are taking all necessary precautions,” Sahu said.

The Health Minister also reminded the public that such respiratory viruses have been a part of human history for centuries, and that maintaining basic hygiene practices like handwashing is always advisable.
