Congress MP Shashi Tharoor once again defended the viral satirical movement Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). He said democracy must give people space to express frustration through humour and satire. On Friday, Tharoor responded to criticism over his earlier remarks. He warned that suppressing such movements would be a mistake. According to him, platforms like CJP reflect the emotions of young people who feel disconnected from mainstream politics.
Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor rejected claims that foreign-backed groups artificially boosted the movement online. Referring to comments made by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, he said most followers of the movement are from India. He also urged Instagram to clarify the issue publicly. However, the Congress leader stressed that the main issue is not who created the movement, but what it represents.
‘Satire Is Better Than Chaos,’ Says Shashi Tharoor
Furthermore, Tharoor described online satire movements as important democratic outlets. He said such platforms allow people to openly express anger, disappointment and frustration. Using a pressure cooker analogy, he explained that movements like CJP work as safety valves that release public pressure. He warned that silencing these voices could create unrest or political instability in the future.
He also said the rapid rise of CJP reflects growing frustration among India’s youth. According to Tharoor, unemployment and political disappointment have pushed many young people toward satire-based movements. He urged both the government and opposition parties to listen carefully to these concerns instead of dismissing them. He added that satire and criticism are healthier for democracy than public anger without any outlet.

Tharoor Says Remarks Were Not Pro-Congress
At the same time, Tharoor clarified that his comments were not meant as political support for the Congress party. While replying to critics on X, he said he wanted to make a broader democratic point. He also noted that CJP and its founder have criticised Congress leaders as well. According to him, this proves the movement is not linked to any single political party.
The Cockroach Janta Party gained massive popularity after controversy erupted over remarks comparing unemployed youth to “cockroaches” and “parasites.” Since then, the movement has attracted millions of followers through memes, parody manifestos and online campaigns. Most of its content focuses on unemployment, inflation and youth frustration. Interestingly, leaders from different political parties, including the All India Trinamool Congress, have also interacted with the movement on social media.
