S. Jaishankar Discusses ‘India-Bharat’ Debate Amid Name Change Speculation

In an exclusive interview with ANI, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the controversy surrounding the invitations for a G20 dinner on September 9, where the invites were sent on behalf of the “President of Bharat.” This move raised questions and sparked debate, especially from opposition parties. Jaishankar emphasized that the term ‘Bharat’ carries significance in the Indian Constitution.

He highlighted that the Constitution includes “India that is Bharat” and encouraged everyone to review it. When discussing the opposition’s reaction and the G20 summit, Jaishankar clarified that “Bharat” carries a distinct and Constitutionally meaningful connotation.

While some opposition parties accused the government of staging a political drama, BJP leaders strongly supported this change. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed satisfaction with the move, stating that it reflects pride in the term ‘Bharat’ and signifies a departure from colonial-era thinking.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, however, criticized the government’s actions, suggesting that they were attempting to rewrite history. He argued that ‘BHARAT’ stands for “Bring Harmony, Amity, Reconciliation, and Trust” and accused the Modi government of distorting the objectives of Indian political parties.
