C. V. Ananda Bose resigned as the Governor of West Bengal ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, triggering fresh political discussion in the state. The sudden move has drawn attention as it comes at a politically sensitive time, with preparations for the polls already underway. Officials said the resignation surprised many as the Governor had been actively attending official events and public programmes in recent days.
According to sources, Amit Shah informed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the development. The Union Home Minister reportedly called the Chief Minister and briefed her about the situation and the Centre’s decision regarding the Governor’s post. Soon after the resignation, the Centre decided to appoint R. N. Ravi, the current Governor of Tamil Nadu, to take additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal.
Reacting to the development, Mamata Banerjee said she was shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation. She stated that she was not aware of the reasons behind Bose’s decision and that the development had come as a surprise to her. The Chief Minister also indicated that political pressure could have been a factor behind the move ahead of the Assembly elections.

In a post on X, Banerjee said the Union Home Minister informed her that R. N. Ravi would take charge as the Governor of West Bengal. However, she claimed that she was not consulted before the decision was taken, which she said goes against established conventions. The Chief Minister added that such unilateral decisions weaken the spirit of the Constitution and affect the federal structure of the country.
Banerjee also said that the Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and avoid actions that undermine democratic traditions. According to her, important decisions related to constitutional positions should follow proper consultation with state governments. She added that such steps could erode the dignity of states and raise concerns about the balance of power between the Centre and the states.
Bose had served as the Governor of West Bengal since November 2022 and his tenure saw several controversies and political disagreements. In May 2024, a woman employee of Raj Bhavan levelled harassment allegations against him, which sparked political debate. The Governor had also raised concerns about the law and order situation in the state, especially after communal violence in Murshidabad in April 2025, often leading to differences with the state government.
