On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the initiative promoting the installation of solar panels on rooftops will be named ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’.Valued at over ₹75,000 crore, the scheme has the objective of illuminating one crore households by offering a monthly allocation of up to 300 units of free electricity.

In order to further sustainable development and people’s wellbeing, we are launching the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This project, with an investment of over Rs. 75,000 crores, aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month. Modi on X.
Promotion of Green Energy By The Central Government
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the solar panel installation scheme during the interim budget for 2024-25.

Sitharaman highlighted that the rooftop solar initiative, which encourages individuals to purchase solar installations and contribute energy to the grid, has the potential to result in annual savings of ₹15,000.
For the fiscal year 2024-25, a substantial ₹10,000 crore has been allocated for solar (grid), compared to the ₹4,970 crore allocated in 2023-24. Additionally, ₹930 crore has been earmarked for wind power (grid), as opposed to the ₹1,214 crore allocation in the previous financial year.
