NDA steps up pressure on Lalu family post court order

A Delhi court on Friday framed charges against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and several family members in the alleged land-for-jobs scam. The ruling triggered sharp political reactions, with the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) demanding that Lalu resign as party president and that his family step down from constitutional posts.

Court Observations and Charges

The Rouse Avenue Court, handling the CBI corruption case, said Lalu and his family acted as a “criminal syndicate” and were involved in an “overarching conspiracy.” Out of 107 accused, the court discharged 52 individuals, including some central personnel officers (CPOs).

Charges were framed against 41 people, including Lalu, his wife Rabri Devi, and sons Tejashwi and Tej Pratap Yadav. Tejashwi and Tej Pratap attended the hearing. Five accused had died during the proceedings. The trial is now set to begin.

Political Reactions

JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said Lalu, who “disgraced politics in the name of socialism,” has no moral right to lead the RJD. He added that a person facing serious charges should not hold any political position.

Kumar also suggested authorities seize Lalu’s land and use it for schools, old-age homes, and public welfare. He said this would send a strong message about the consequences of corruption. “This is a judicial, not a political, downfall. I hope the court concludes the case soon. The people of Bihar have already exposed this corrupt family,” he said.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, who earlier suggested checking reports of Lalu’s alleged illegal land holdings, said the court highlighted the deep-rooted corruption of the Lalu family. Bihar Minister Ramkripal Yadav added that the law was taking its natural course and that the court’s observations were based on the case record.

Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Political Background

Lalu served as Union Railway Minister during the UPA government from 2004 to 2008. The court’s decision marks a major step in the judicial process and may have far-reaching political consequences.
