The Congress had applied to commence the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Hatta Kangjeibung in the Imphal East district.
Manipur Government denied Congress permission to initiate its Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, originally scheduled to start from Palace Ground in Imphal. Rahul Gandhi, leading the Yatra, had planned to commence it on January 14 from Imphal, concluding on March 20 in Mumbai. Confirming the development, Congress general secretary (organization) K.C. Venugopal stated, “This morning, we learned that the Manipur Government has declined permission to start the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from the Palace Ground at Imphal. We are looking for an alternative site, but we will start from Imphal itself.”

Congress sources informed The Hindu that the Manipur government has granted permission for the flag-off at Palace Ground but not for the rally. Earlier on Tuesday, while addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Mr. Venugopal stated that Manipur has been chosen to initiate the march to “heal the wounds” of its people affected by ethnic violence. Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge is scheduled to inaugurate the program in the presence of Chief Ministers of Congress-ruled States and other party leaders. A day earlier, Chief Minister N Biren Singh had said the Congress’ request was being looked into in consultation with security agencies. The Northeastern state was hit by a wave of ethnic violence in mid-2023. Though the situation has improved sporadic incidents of violence continue to be reported.
