Sikh IPS Officer Reacts, as BJP Workers called him ‘Khalistani’

Recently, Sikh IPS officer Jaspreet Singh, stationed in Dhamakhali, stirred controversy by hindering the visit of senior West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari to the tumultuous Sandeshkhali. in the North 24 Parganas district. Singh and his team set up barricades to block Adhikari’s visit, leading to alleged taunts from a group of BJP supporters who reportedly branded him as a ‘Khalistani’.

Amidst the escalating tensions, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, who was accompanying Adhikari, leveled accusations against Singh for neglecting his duties. Paul vehemently dismissed the allegation that BJP supporters had referred to the Sikh IPS officer as a ‘Khalistani’.

However, the situation escalated further when Singh, visibly upset by the taunts, responded to the accusations. He expressed, “Just because I am wearing a turban, you people are calling me a Khalistani? Is this what you have learned? If a police officer wears a turban and performs his duty honestly, he becomes a Khalistani for you? Shame on you,” emphatically emphasizing that he was merely carrying out his responsibilities.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the incident, asserting that the BJP’s divisive politics has breached constitutional boundaries. Expressing deep dismay, she highlighted the audacious attempt to tarnish the image of Sikhs, a community revered for sacrifices and unwavering dedication to the nation.

Banerjee took to social media platforms, sharing a video clip to underscore her concerns about the divisive tactics employed by the BJP. In response to criticism, Singh emphasized his sole focus on fulfilling duties and questioned the relevance of his religion being brought up. This incident underscores broader concerns about the intersection of politics and religion, highlighting challenges faced by officers in a charged political environment.
