British Prime Minister Keir Starmer began his two-day official visit to India on Wednesday, highlighting Scotch whisky as a “big winner” of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which the UK government expects will add around 190 million pounds annually to the Scottish economy. During the visit, Starmer emphasized that this historic trade deal opens new avenues for Scottish producers and could significantly increase exports. In addition, the UK government noted that Scotch whisky, along with other iconic Scottish products, will benefit from reduced tariffs, giving India’s large consumer base easier access to these premium goods. The Prime Minister’s visit also aims to strengthen diplomatic and trade ties between the two countries, promoting mutual economic growth.

Keir Starmer Leads Trade Mission Focused on Scotch Whisky
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is leading a trade delegation that includes members of the Scotch Whisky Association and prominent producers, aiming to explore first-hand the potential increase in whisky exports to India, estimated at one billion pounds annually. This surge in exports is expected to generate over 1,000 new jobs across the UK, highlighting the broader economic benefits of the FTA. Starmer’s itinerary includes meetings with senior Indian government officials and business leaders to discuss bilateral trade opportunities. According to Downing Street, the visit reflects the UK government’s commitment to turning trade agreements into actionable growth, particularly for Scotland’s high-value industries.
The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), once ratified by the British Parliament, will significantly reduce Indian import tariffs on Scotch whisky. According to Douglas Alexander, UK Secretary of State for Scotland, this historic agreement will allow Scottish whisky to reach India’s vast market more competitively, while also boosting exports of shortbread and popular drinks like Irn Bru. Alexander emphasized that the government’s support can help these products achieve global reach. Moreover, the agreement represents a collaborative effort between government and industry to create long-term strategic opportunities, particularly as producers navigate current economic challenges.
Economic Benefits and Strategic Opportunities Highlighted
Mark Kent, Chief Executive of the Scotch Whisky Association, noted that liberalized tariffs will expand access to India, the world’s largest whisky market, while providing Indian consumers with more choices. Similarly, the UK government’s analysis predicts that the CETA will increase bilateral trade by 25.5 billion pounds, raise UK GDP by 4.8 billion pounds, and add 2.2 billion pounds annually in wages. Starmer’s delegation also includes Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle and Investment Minister Lord Jason Stockwood, emphasizing the focus on implementing the agreement effectively and maximizing economic opportunities for Scottish industries.
Long-Term Vision for India-UK Trade
Douglas Alexander added that this trade deal could transform Scotland’s whisky industry over the long term, with the visit offering an opportunity to fully leverage these benefits. The FTA reflects the strong UK-India economic partnership forged during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UK in July. Starmer’s visit, therefore, combines diplomatic engagement with economic strategy, aiming to ensure that both countries fully realize the agreement’s potential. The Prime Minister highlighted that Scotch whisky, along with other Scottish products, exemplifies the high-value goods that can benefit from free trade, creating jobs and boosting growth across all parts of the United Kingdom.
