BJP’s Kalita Majhi rises from house help to MLA as saffron tide sweeps Bengal

Kalita Majhi, a domestic worker from Guskara, has won the Ausgram Assembly seat as the BJP swept to power in West Bengal. Her victory highlights the party’s focus on promoting grassroots candidates during a broader political shift in the state. In one of the most striking personal wins of the election, Majhi—who earned ₹2,500 a month—secured 1,07,692 votes and defeated Shyama Prasanna Lohar by 12,535 votes.

Kalita Majhi’s rise from domestic worker to MLA highlights BJP’s grassroots push in Bengal

Majhi lived in Guskara Municipality and worked in four households before entering politics. Her candidacy drew attention for its humble background, and her win reflects a rare case of socio-economic mobility through electoral politics. She had earlier contested the 2021 Assembly elections but lost to Trinamool Congress candidate Abhedananda Thander by 11,815 votes. This time, the BJP re-nominated her, showing confidence in her strong local connect, which translated into electoral gains.

Her victory came alongside a massive BJP mandate, with the party winning 206 out of 294 seats and crossing the two-thirds majority mark. This result ended the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule and signaled a major political transformation in West Bengal. The outcome also marked the first time since 1972 that the same party will govern both the state and the Centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the win, crediting the party’s organization and outreach efforts, while Mamata Banerjee lost the Bhabanipur seat in a significant upset.

Banerjee raised concerns over alleged irregularities and vowed a comeback, even as the results showed declining support for her party across regions. The BJP’s rise in Bengal has been gradual yet decisive—from a marginal force in 2011 to the ruling party in 2026. Within this broader shift, Kalita Majhi’s journey from domestic work to the Assembly stands out as a powerful example of grassroots democracy driving new leadership.
