Iran Faces Mounting Pressure as Protests Intensify and Leadership Struggles to Maintain Control

Iran’s theocratic leadership is facing one of its most severe challenges in years as protests spread across the country for a third consecutive week. Demonstrators initially took to the streets over rising prices and unemployment, but they now openly demand an end to the clerical system that has governed Iran for decades.

Security forces have responded aggressively, detaining thousands and killing hundreds in an effort to regain control, according to human rights organizations. Authorities have also shut down internet and phone services in several regions to restrict communication and limit media coverage.

Economic distress and political repression fuel nationwide demonstrations, while US warnings intensify pressure on Tehran.

Analysts say years of corruption, economic mismanagement, and political repression have pushed public anger to a breaking point. International sanctions have further weakened the economy, shrinking the middle class and reducing opportunities for reform-minded citizens.

Iran’s leadership is also losing strategic influence beyond its borders. Israeli military operations have weakened Iran-backed groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, while US airstrikes have damaged critical parts of Iran’s nuclear facilities. The fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad removed a key regional ally and further isolated Tehran.

US President Donald Trump has openly backed the protest movement and warned Iran against using deadly force. While US officials continue to review possible military options, experts caution that foreign intervention may not quickly change the situation, as Iran’s security forces remain loyal to the regime.

President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused foreign-backed groups of fueling unrest and labeled protesters as rioters and extremists. At the same time, he has acknowledged public grievances and promised economic relief, including limited cash assistance and improved living conditions.
