Earlier this month, Himanta Biswa Sarma campaigned for the BJP in Jorhat and said he would not spare those who eat cow meat. However, as voting approached in Assam, he clarified his position and tried to soften his stance. He said there is no prohibition on eating beef, but people should restrict it to private spaces. This shift in tone has further intensified the political debate across the state and drawn attention from various parties.
He added that a large section of Muslims in Assam consumes beef, and the government does not interfere in their personal choices. However, he stressed that people should avoid eating it in public places or near temples to maintain social harmony. As a result, he pushed for a balance between personal freedom and public sensitivity. At the same time, his remarks gained attention due to the contrast with his earlier strict statements.
Himanta remarks Opposition attacks BJP
Meanwhile, opposition parties reacted strongly to his remarks and criticised the BJP’s stand on the issue. The Aam Aadmi Party and the Samajwadi Party targeted the ruling party and questioned its consistency. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav urged people to remove the BJP and protect cows, which added fuel to the ongoing political debate. In addition, AAP accused the BJP of using cow-related issues for political purposes.
Furthermore, AAP claimed that some groups carry out violence in the name of cow protection, which creates fear among people. Therefore, the party argued that such statements from BJP leaders send mixed signals to the public. It also said these remarks highlight contradictions in the party’s approach. As the debate continued, political tensions increased ahead of voting and public reactions became sharper.

Law and past statements
Earlier, Sarma warned that authorities would take legal action against those eating beef in public and said police would file FIRs under the law. However, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 allows people to consume beef in private spaces without restriction. At the same time, the law bans consumption in public places such as restaurants, gatherings and events to maintain order.
Recently, Himanta Sarma also accused a rival candidate’s family of supporting beef consumption and raised questions over their stance. However, the party rejected these claims and called them politically motivated and misleading. Meanwhile, Assam will hold assembly elections on April 9, and authorities will announce the results on May 4, which makes the political atmosphere even more charged.
