Gulf Attacks: Growing tensions in the Middle East have once again pushed global diplomacy into action after the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution condemning attacks linked to Iran against several Gulf nations and Jordan. The decision reflects rising international concern about regional stability and the safety of crucial maritime routes that support global trade and energy supplies.

India joined more than 130 countries in backing the resolution, which strongly criticised what it described as serious attacks against Gulf Cooperation Council nations and demanded that Iran immediately stop any further hostile actions. The resolution also emphasised the importance of preserving regional peace while urging all parties to follow international law and avoid steps that could further destabilise the Middle East.

Diplomats confirmed that the measure received strong support within the Security Council and showed a rare moment of consensus among many nations regarding regional security concerns. At the same time, the development intensified global debate about how major powers should respond to increasing geopolitical tensions in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive regions.

Gulf Attacks Draw Global Condemnation at UN Security Council

The fifteen-member United Nations Security Council approved the resolution with thirteen votes in favour, while China and Russia abstained during the voting process. The council, which the United States currently presides over, stated that the reported Gulf attacks constitute a serious violation of international law and threaten global peace and security.

India co-sponsored the Bahrain-led resolution along with a broad coalition of countries from different regions, including major global powers and several Asian and European nations. The document reaffirmed strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Gulf Cooperation Council members, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, along with Jordan.

Furthermore, the resolution demanded that Iran immediately halt all attacks against these nations and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the region. It also criticised threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage that carries a large share of the world’s oil shipments and plays a vital role in global energy security.

International Reactions and Iran’s Response

The resolution raised serious concerns about civilian safety after several reports indicated that recent attacks damaged residential areas and other civilian facilities. Members of the Security Council stressed that all parties must respect international humanitarian law and ensure that civilians never become targets during military confrontations.

Officials from the United States described the adoption of the resolution as a clear message from the international community condemning violence against Gulf nations and demanding accountability. They argued that Washington and its partners had pursued diplomatic solutions for years, yet they also warned that continued aggression could deepen instability across the region.

Meanwhile, Iran’s representative at the United Nations rejected the accusations and labelled the resolution unfair and inconsistent with international law. Iranian officials maintained that their military targeted specific strategic locations and conducted these operations as defensive measures, rather than attacks directed at neighbouring countries.

Despite these disagreements, analysts believe the resolution places growing international pressure on Tehran and highlights the widening geopolitical tensions shaping the Middle East today. Observers also warn that continued confrontation could disrupt maritime security, affect global energy supplies, and strain diplomatic relations across the region.
