BJP Drops George Kurian from Rajya Sabha List, Minister Steps Down

Veteran BJP leader George Kurian resigned from the Union Council of Ministers after completing his six-year term in the Rajya Sabha. The BJP did not nominate him for another term in the Upper House. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation under Article 75(2) of the Constitution on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

George Kurian Quits Union Cabinet After Rajya Sabha Snub

Kurian, a 65-year-old leader from Kottayam, Kerala, has played an active role in the BJP for decades. As a lawyer and senior party leader, he frequently translated speeches of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah into Malayalam during their visits to Kerala. The BJP inducted him into the Union Cabinet in 2024.

The party viewed Kurian’s induction as part of its effort to strengthen support among Kerala’s Christian community. He belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and has remained associated with the BJP since its formation in 1980. Over the years, he held several key organizational positions within the party.

BJP Drops Kurian, Minister Resigns

Kurian also contested the 2016 Kerala Assembly elections from Puthuppally against former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy but lost the election. Earlier, he served as Officer on Special Duty to senior BJP leader O. Rajagopal during the Vajpayee-led government between 1999 and 2004.

According to BJP sources, the party did not inform Kurian in advance about its decision not to renominate him to the Rajya Sabha. He reportedly learned about the move when the BJP announced its list of candidates on June 4. This year, the party nominated Tarun Chugh and Rajneesh Agrawal from Madhya Pradesh for the Upper House.
