Fuel Curbs Drive: Delhi CM Limits Official Vehicle Use After PM Modi’s Appeal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for nationwide austerity measures as global fuel prices continued to rise due to the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict and uncertainty in international energy supply chains. Following the appeal, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a major reduction in the use of official vehicles across the Delhi government.

Fuel Curbs Drive

The Delhi government decided to limit the number of official vehicles used by ministers, MLAs, officers and various government departments. Rekha Gupta stated that the restrictions would apply equally to her, Cabinet ministers, BJP legislators and administrative officials. She said the government would now prioritise vehicle-sharing, carpooling and public transport wherever possible instead of maintaining unnecessary official travel.

In a post on X, the chief minister said the administration wanted to set an example by reducing fuel consumption during a period of global energy uncertainty. She added that officials would use government vehicles strictly according to necessity and avoid excessive movement to help conserve petroleum resources.

Rekha Gupta also appealed to the public to support the initiative by reducing dependency on private vehicles. She encouraged Delhi residents to increasingly use public transport systems such as the Delhi Metro and buses, especially for daily commuting. According to the chief minister, collective participation from citizens could help lower fuel consumption and reduce pressure caused by fluctuating global oil prices.

The move came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi advised citizens and institutions to adopt several cost-saving and energy-conservation measures. These included promoting work from home, limiting foreign travel, reducing unnecessary purchases of gold and cutting down the use of petroleum products and household essentials. The Centre believes such steps could help India manage the economic impact of global geopolitical tensions and volatile fuel markets.

Delhi’s latest decision reflects a broader attempt by governments to promote responsible energy consumption and prepare for possible economic challenges linked to the global fuel situation. The administration said both officials and citizens must contribute towards conserving resources and supporting national interests during the crisis.
