The schedule for the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections will be made available to the public by the Indian Election Commission today. The polling agency will reveal the date at 11:30.
The 224-member Karnataka Assembly’s present term expires on May 24.
The BJP has set a goal of capturing at least 150 of the 224 Assembly seats up for election in May. The ruling BJP is aiming to win at least 150 of the 224 seats in the Karnataka Assembly. In the meantime, the JD(S) and Congress have each released their initial lists of 93 and 124 candidates, respectively.
The Basavaraj Bommai-led Karnataka government last week proposed two new categories for quota in jobs and education, which might become a crucial election issue in the state. In addition, the 4% quota set aside for Muslims belonging to other backward classes (OBCs) was abolished by Chief Minister Bommai. The Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities would now each receive 4% of the reservation equally.
The BJP now holds 119 seats in the 224-seat Karnataka Legislature, while the Congress holds 75 seats and its ally JD(S) holds 28.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Bommai accused DK Shivakumar, the leader of the Karnataka Congress, of attracting BJP legislators by promising them tickets to seats in which the Congress has not yet chosen its candidates for the 2019 elections.
“During the previous two to three days, KPCC President D K Shivakumar has been calling our MLAs in 100 constituencies where they haven’t yet announced tickets. He is saying that we will give you the ticket if you (BJP MLAs) join the Congress “According to Mr. Bommai, as reported by PTI news agency.
On the other hand, as they battle to retake power, Congress and its allies are riding high on anti-incumbency and several corruption allegations against the BJP.
