DMK slams Congress as “betrayer” over support to TVK

Congress leaders decided to extend conditional support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) during a late-night virtual meeting on Tuesday, according to sources. The party reportedly demanded cabinet berths and chairmanships in key boards as part of the arrangement. A formal announcement is expected on Thursday, after which Congress MLAs are likely to meet Vijay in Panaiyur. This move comes as Congress shifts its stance following TVK’s strong electoral performance.

Congress backs TVK, DMK cries betrayal

The decision triggered sharp criticism from its former ally DMK, which accused Congress of betrayal. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai openly called the party “backstabbers,” highlighting that Congress secured its five assembly seats only due to the support of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. He also reminded Congress of past support extended by the DMK leadership during political attacks on Rahul Gandhi.

Political developments unfolded rapidly after Congress general secretary KC Venugopal stated that the final decision would rest with the Tamil Nadu unit. Soon after, the state leadership moved ahead with aligning with TVK. The party reportedly passed a resolution confirming conditional support, and TVK acknowledged receiving official communication. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram is said to be coordinating discussions between the two sides.

TVK, led by Vijay, emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, just short of a majority. The party has ruled out any alliance with the BJP and continues to position DMK as its main rival. Meanwhile, Vijay has reached out to other former allies of the DMK-led alliance, including CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML, as Congress signals a decisive break from its previous partnership with DMK.
