Priyanka Gandhi quotes Netaji’s letter rejects PM’s claim on Vande Mataram

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Monday rejected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s allegation that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had once warned Subhash Chandra Bose that the origins of Vande Mataram might provoke Muslim sentiments. She said the Prime Minister presented a misleading and selective reading of history during his Lok Sabha address and accused him of quoting only a chosen portion of Nehru’s letter to Netaji.

Priyanka Accuses PM Modi of Selectively Quoting Nehru’s 1937 Letter

Priyanka referred to the 1937 letter exchanged between Nehru and Bose, stressing that Nehru did not object to Vande Mataram on his own. She stated that Nehru’s position was far more nuanced than what the Prime Minister suggested. According to Priyanka, Nehru clearly wrote that “the so-called objection” to the remaining stanzas of Vande Mataram was created by communal forces. She argued that Nehru believed in handling cultural debates responsibly and never supported using national symbols to divide communities. She added that portraying Nehru as someone who feared Muslim reactions distorts both the context and the truth.

Congress Leader Says Communal Forces Invented Objections to Vande Mataram

Priyanka further said that the Prime Minister’s remarks were designed to stir controversy and shift focus from current national issues. She urged citizens to read the full letter instead of relying on political interpretations that ignore essential details. Misquoting historical figures, she warned, weakens democratic debate and encourages unnecessary communal polarization. Opposition leaders echoed her criticism and demanded that the government stop manipulating historical documents for political advantage. The controversy has now sparked a renewed public discussion on the historical debates surrounding Vande Mataram and the role of national leaders in shaping cultural harmony.
