Congress leader Rahul Gandhi back as MP after SC relief

Rahul Gandhi, a Congress party leader, had his parliamentary membership restored recently. This decision came after the Supreme Court temporarily halted his conviction in a 2019 criminal defamation case.

The case was related to his comments about the “Modi surname.”A notification from the Lok Sabha secretariat confirmed that Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as a Lok Sabha member has been revoked.

As a result, Rahul Gandhi returned to Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon session. Upon his arrival, he received a warm welcome from several Opposition MPs.

Before commencing his legislative duties, Rahul Gandhi offered his prayers in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP on March 23 after a Gujarat court convicted him in a defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remarks and sentenced him to two years in jail.

A punishment for two years and above automatically disqualifies a lawmaker.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge termed the decision to restore Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary membership as a “welcome step”.

On August 4, the Supreme Court intervened and put a hold on Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a 2019 criminal defamation case, which was related to his remarks about the “Modi surname.”

The court pointed out that the trial judge in a Surat court had not provided sufficient reasons for imposing the maximum sentence of two years in the case.

Prior to his disqualification in March of the current year, Rahul Gandhi was serving as an MP from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala.

After the Gujarat High Court rejected his petition to suspend his conviction while the session court heard his appeal to cancel the conviction entirely, Rahul Gandhi approached the Supreme Court for relief.
