CJP’s Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka Jailed for 5 Days Over Jantar Mantar Trespass

New Delhi: A Delhi court has remanded Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to five days of judicial custody following their arrest over alleged trespassing at Jantar Mantar.

Police also booked the two leaders for allegedly violating bond conditions and obstructing a public official’s duties. Authorities produced Das, Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde before a magistrate at Mandir Marg around 8 am on Wednesday. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced the judicial custody decision on X and accused the government of suppressing dissent. According to Delhi Police sources, Das and Ranka allegedly violated Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) again.

Police Cite Bond Violations as CJP Opposes Restrictions on Protest Venues

Police claimed that both leaders breached the conditions of previously executed bonds. The court subsequently remanded them to judicial custody, the sources said. Police detained the three leaders on Tuesday morning after they allegedly crossed barricades, entered Jantar Mantar and raised slogans demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. CJP legal team head Ratna Singh said authorities released Shinde on a personal bond. She also alleged that police prevented the three leaders from meeting their lawyers until late Tuesday night. According to Singh, officers brought them to Parliament Street Police Station in a private van around 3 am. Authorities had previously released Das and Ranka after they furnished bonds of ₹50,000 each.

Both leaders had also promised to avoid involvement in breach-of-peace cases for one year. Police now accuse them of trespassing and violating those bond conditions. The arrests come amid protests by CJP and opposition groups over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. On October 11, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar designated Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as protest venues. The order removed Jantar Mantar from the list of approved demonstration sites. CJP has opposed the decision, arguing that relocating protests away from central Delhi would reduce their visibility and public impact.
