After facing 21 months of opposition from Kuki-Zo leaders. Declining support in the Meitei-majority Imphal Valley, demands for his resignation from the Opposition. And the withdrawal of support by a key NDA ally. Mounting pressure from his own colleagues in the Valley ultimately forced N Biren Singh to step down as Manipur Chief Minister on Sunday.
Kuki-Zo groups, along with 10 MLAs from the community—including seven BJP legislators, two of whom were ministers—held Singh accountable for the ethnic conflict that erupted in the state on May 3, 2023.

Internal Dissent and the Turning Point for Biren Singh in Manipur BJP
Discontent within N Biren Singh’s own party ranks grew louder last year and escalated further over time. BJP MLAs from the Imphal Valley repeatedly approached the party’s central leadership. Including the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in October 2024, demanding a change in leadership. However, the BJP leadership continued to stand by Singh.
The tipping point came with the impending Budget session of the Manipur Assembly, set to begin on Monday. Frustrated by the lack of response to their demands, dissident MLAs were preparing for an “unprecedented and drastic move”. By supporting a no-confidence motion that the Congress was reportedly planning to introduce.

Deepening Rift and Pressure on B. Singh
As tensions escalated within the BJP, Singh’s loyalists and dissidents began holding separate meetings by Sunday morning ahead of the Assembly session.
The situation gained momentum when Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, a critic of Biren Singh, met BJP president J P Nadda in New Delhi last week. He reportedly informed Nadda about the likely no-confidence motion and indicated he couldn’t prevent it.
On February 3, another critic, Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, also reached Delhi, warning that the government might collapse if Singh wasn’t replaced. The next day, Governor A K Bhalla briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the unfolding crisis.
